Info 1
Info Info Around 6:01 p.m. CDT on May 19, reports from KWTV-DT confirmed that a tornado had touched down along the shores of Lake Thunderbird in Cleveland County to the east of Norman. A home near the lake was mostly destroyed, temporarily trapping two residents. A total of 30–40 homes were damaged or destroyed in Cleveland County. Tracking generally east-northeast to northeast, the tornado moved into Pottawatomie County where it caused significant damage. Near the town of Shawnee, a mobile home park sustained a direct hit from the storm. There, two people were killed and six others were injured, two critically, while 30–35 homes were damaged or destroyed. Debris from the tornado was reported to have fallen in Bristow, Depew, and Tulsa. Storm spotters reported scoured earth along the tornado track in this area. The tornado soon crossed Interstate 40 at the exchange with U.S. Route 177. There, a tractor-trailer was blown off an overpass, falling 20 ft (6.1 m), and was destroyed, while two other trucks were knocked on their sides; four cars were also impacted. The driver of the first truck sustained minor injuries. The incident shut down U.S. Route 177 and westbound lanes of Interstate 40 in the area; U.S. Route 177 opened the following morning, while traffic on Interstate 40 was restricted to one lane. A survey by the National Weather Service in Norman confirmed that the tornado attained EF4 or greater intensity along part of its path.
